SUPERGIRL movie review – Soaring beyond Krypton: A bold take on Supergirl’s new cinematic flight

Review by Allie G.

Director: Craig Gillespie
Starring: Milly Alcock, Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa
Movie Length: 1 hours 48 minutes

What Allie thought:  As a fan of the comic I went into the movie knowing what some of the source material for it was. That being said Milly Alcock shines as Supergirl and was able to convey her trauma well. The actress who played Ruthye (Eve Ridley in her feature film debut) gives a strong performance, and Jason Momoa was born to play Lobo and looked as if he was having a blast in the role. The chemistry between Lobo and Ruthye was great and wish we got more of the two together.

The flashbacks were well done and emotional, and were easily the best parts of the film including the origins of how Kara found Krypto and showing their bond. Krypto is adorable and we are invested in Supergirl finding an antidote to save his life.

The score and soundtrack set the tone of the film well with Claudia Sarne stepping up after both Ramin Djawadi and Junkie XL left the project.

Now lets talk about what I didn’t like. The antagonist sucked, I felt he was one dimensional and more annoying than a formidable opponent for Supergirl. He came off more like a fly that Supergirl just needed to swat out of the way than a high stakes villain.

The sepia coloring – it gave vibes of being in a cantina on a Star Wars set or GOTG. A more colorful background would have been visually appealing.

I also felt that the movie took influence from films like Star Wars, GOTG, and Mad Max: Fury Road. While this can be a good thing, it felt like too much of a mash up, and not enough like a standalone Supergirl film.

I also didn’t like the fact that it felt like there was not enough of the source material. The change to the ending was for the worse, the original ending in the comic was heartfelt and provides closure for both Kara and Ruthye’s on learning how to accept grief, learn to heal from it, forgive and move forward. The film ending is abrupt and again, felt like Supergirl was simply swatting away an irritable fly.

The Superman cameos felt unnecessary and disjointed from the overall film.

Allie’s rating: 6/10. Overall, Supergirl is at times fun and the action sequences are spectacular. The film misses the mark in introducing the audience to Supergirl. Because of this, I recommend watching during matinée hours, or wait for streaming.

Supergirl will be released June 26th 2026.
