THE SICKNESS #1 review – A well written story that sinks its teeth into you (Cha, Nadler, Otsmane-Elhaou) Uncivilized Books

Writers: Jenna Cha and Lonnie Nadler
Artist: Jenna Cha
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

Thanks to Uncivilized Books for the review copy!

Two stories that intertwine over a decade and share a similar darkness that has plagued a couple local townspeople. One a young boy who’s just about to start high school and is being tortured by mass hysteria, hallucinations, and crippling fear. Another, a decade later, a mother who has succumbed to some potential illness with similar symptoms and viciously murdered her whole family. When a retiring doc is challenged with taking on the mother as a patient he becomes determined to figure out what caused her actions. Even if it means his own sanity.

This was a fun read! I loved the black and white aesthetic and old timey newspaper style charm. It almost has that classic Twilight Zone vibe with its mix of supernatural and science fiction vibes. Cha and Nadler do a great job of weaving between the two timelines and subtly shifting the dialogue between the two. It’s a creepy story that plays much like an end of times or biblical plague type story but then is turned on its head with the introduction of a possible ghostly force or supernatural entity. We don’t fully know how it pulls together yet but there is a sense early on that everything is related. It’s a well written story that sinks its teeth into you and leaves you wanting more. Cha’s art is fantastic as well! I love the tight crisp black lines and shading. The detail is incredible and she delivers the perfect balance of mood and setting. There are a few panels that are just outright chilling! The lettering is also nicely arranged and easy to digest. It blends in well with the art in every panel. If you are a fan of horror and suspense get this on your pull list ASAP. This is a book that sticks with you long after reading. I can’t wait to read the next issue!

My rating – 9/10 Excellent!
