Director: Steve Buscemi
Starring: Tessa Thompson, Logan Marshall-Green, and Derek Cecil
Movie Length: 1 hours 36 minutes
What it is: We follow a helpline volunteer taking calls in the middle of the night from anyone who calls the helpline whether they are lonely, the lost, or simply just need a listening ear.
What Vanessa thought: It’s not an easy task being a listener when people calling in come with all sorts of issues and expect a helpful resolution after they have spilled their guts out to you. Unfortunately the movie kept to just Tessa’s character house during the night time, on the laptop talking to voices from the good, the bad, and the extremely weird. So visually there is really nothing to see but its extremely dramatic and thoughtful listen too though.
Vanessa’s grade: C+, if it was a podcast then I would have given it an A.
The Listener was reviewed out of the Tribeca Film Festival, and will be eventually released in the US.
